Colors And Shapes Inspire Me...

From Malaysia to Chennai via Kumbakonam, Baroda and Cannanore – the life’s journey of a man, artist and his art. Sam Adaikalasamy takes the viewer through this journey by means of his paintings, though not necessarily chronologically. As he creates his imageries his deep seated memories take him back and forth.

Sam applies different colours in an abstract manner often overlapping one another and then start removing them allowing forms to emerge. The process continues even today. The emerging forms seem to follow some ideas from his subconscious mind as if he himself is not aware of them. These are never preconceived ideas. “My memories alone are my inspiration”. For removing colours he might have used a nail to scratch in the early stages when he was young, but now he uses varied materials to achieve the effect he desires; besides they also often influence the emerging forms.

“The subjects in the subconscious mind are black and white; but when I confront the canvas, I bring them out of the dark confines and present them in varied hues. It is my discretion what colour I want to use.”
